2011 Smart ForTwo Revealed, Greener Engines And New Interior

The Smart ForTwo has come in for a refresh, with the Daimler-owned brand announcing the updated-for-2011 range this week, expected in Australia late this year or early in 2011.

The front end of the ForTwo has been modestly updated, with perhaps the most obvious change coming in the form of new optional daytime running lights in each of the side vents.

A new matte light green has been added to the otherwise all-metallic colour palette, and buyers of the convertible variant can now choose from a red or blue softtop.

On the inside, the dash of the updated ForTwo features a new touchscreen system as standard, including navigation and audio controls, along with Bluetooth connectivity.

Other updates include new fabrics and minor tweaks to the interior.

Smart has also announced a special 'Lightshine' variant, which features colour-coded headlamp housings, 15-inch wheels and satin chrome highlights.

While the engine and transmission options remain largely unchanged, tightening environmental laws in Europe have lead Daimler to tweak the engines for lower CO2 emissions.

The 40kW cdi turbodiesel (not currently available in Australia) lists emissions of just 86g/km, while the 45kW and 52kW mhd petrol models release just 97g/km of CO2 and use 4.2 litres of petrol on the combined cycle.

Last year saw the Smart ForTwo mhd crowned Australia's greenest car by the Federal Government's Green Vehicle Guide, although it has since been surpassed by the 2010 Toyota Prius.

The 62kW version uses 4.9 l/100km, releasing 114g/km of CO2, and while the Brabus ForTwo gets a power boost from 72kW to 75kW, its emissions are still a low 119g/km.
