REVEALED IN CONCEPT FORM this year at the Geneva Motor Show, the unusually styled Nissan Qazana is expected to signal a new design direction for the Japanese carmaker when it is launched next year.

According to sources quoted by UK magazine Autocar, the production version of the Qazana will mark a "more attractive and emotional appeal" for Nissan's future cars.

The source reportedly told Autocar that the production Qazana will retain much of the concept's exaggerated proportions and styling, along with the interior - including its motorcycle-like centre console.

“We have studied the market and customers extremely closely and are sure that it will be a success,” Autocar's source said.

Little is known about the Qazana's powertrain, although the 1.5 through to 2.0 litre petrol and diesel engines powering the Dualis could be on the cards.

Unconfirmed reports from Japan in August suggested Nissan has been working on an electric version of the Qazana to go on sale in 2013, around two years after the regular model is launched.

The all-electric Qazana would utilise the same lithium-ion battery technology as the 2012 Nissan LEAF, offering a driving range of around 160 kilometres.
