New spy photos of the upcoming next-generation SLK reveal that development of the AMG variant is continuing alongside the regular model.

According to our spy photographers, the distinct note of a V8 engine - possibly AMG's new 5.5 litre V8 - could be heard rumbling away beneath the test car's bonnet, meaning the new SLK AMG might offer more than 335kW when it launches next year. That's a gain of around 70kW over the current model.

Adding further credence to its potential AMG identity, the spied test car also featured quad-tip tailpipes, a more significant front bumper with larger intakes, and more pronounced bodywork beneath the heavy camouflage.

As with the rest of the AMG range, we can expect large forged alloy wheels in front of bigger, more powerful brakes. Inside, the SLK AMG will likely draw some inspiration from its supercar cousin, the SLS AMG - masses of leather, aluminium highlights and classic design elements.

The new SLK is expected to debut early next year, with the AMG model likely to follow in the months after.
