DEVELOPMENT OF THE 2011 BMW X3 is gathering pace, with BMW reportedly keen to bring the next generation of its mid-strength crossover to market quickly to steal a march on the Mercedes-Benz GLK and Audi Q5.

First spied late last year in BMW's trademark psychedelic camouflage, new shots obtained today reveal new details previously obscured.

Although this test car still has much of ts details obscured, we can at least see the headlamps, grille and lower bumper, which our designer has rendered above.

The cutlines suggest expanded cabin dimensions, and from what can be discerned, styling may be a little more muscular and X5-like than the current model.

Powertrains are expected to carry over unchanged, and Australia-bound models will likely feature the same two diesel and two petrol engines as used by the current model. A hybrid is reportedly in the works, but has yet to be confirmed.

Expect to see the new X3 go on sale in Europe sometime in the latter half of 2010, with local sales commencing sometime after.
