WE'VE DRIVEN the base model and tested the sporty 118 TSI, and now it's nearly here: Volkswagen's latest hot hatch flagship, the Golf GTI.

TMR is at the launch of the new GTI today, but for now, read on for the full technical details and pricing.

Virtually identical to the GTI concept unveiled in Paris last year, the new GTI features the classic red-rimmed honeycomb grille and big rotary-dial alloy wheels.

The GTI's turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is connected to an acoustically-tuned exhaust system terminating in a pair of tailpipes at the rear bumper's bottom corners, and a 'sound generator' transfers the engine's note into the cabin.

Developing 155kW and 280Nm, the Mk VI GTI is the most powerful GTI yet, covering the 0-100km/h sprint in 6.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of 240km/h.

The full 280Nm of torque available from 1700rpm to 5200rpm, translating to a 80-120km/h dash of 7.5 seconds.

The Euro V-compliant Golf VI GTI consumes just 7.3 litres of petrol on the combined cycle, with emissions rated at 173 g/km of CO2.

A six-speed manual is the standard transmission, and a quick-shifting six-speed DSG twin-clutch will be available.

The DSG-equipped GTI boasts the same 0-100 time as the manual model, however top speed is down by 2km/h and economy is slightly worse off at 7.4 l/100km.

The seven-speed DSG available on other models in the Golf range is not offered, likely due to the higher torque and power output of the GTI's engine.

Electronically-adjustable dampers are standard, and according to Volkswagen, suspension is lower, tauter and more resistant to roll.

Inside, the new GTI gets the classic tartan trim, black headliner, a leather steering wheel and red stitching.

Gloss black inserts, alloy pedals and GTI emblems feature throughout.

TMR is awaiting confirmation on availability, but the official word from Volkswagen Australia is that the new GTI will be in showrooms this year.
