DEVELOPMENT OF THE upcoming 2010 BMW X3 is well underway, as these new spy photos reveal.

Wearing BMW's trademark disruptive camouflage, the new X3 is noticeably larger than the current model, confirming earlier suspicions that the 2010 model would benefit from a boost in overall dimensions.

The increased size of the next generation X3, which will help the the SUV compete against the Audi Q5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLK, will allow the upcoming 2010 X1 to comfortably slot into the BMW line-up beneath it.

Visually, the new X3 has taken on a more rounded form than the current model, drawing inspiration from the latest generation X5.

Units designed specifically for testing purposes sit in place of the tail-light and headlight housings, giving no indication of the styling beneath (so don't be alarmed at what you see here).

Engine options are expected to remain largely unchanged from the current range, including a choice of four diesel engines offering between 132kW and 223kW. Petrol-powered models are expected to range in output from 172kW up to 228kW.
