ONLY MONTHS AFTER BMW added the current generation X5 SUV to its Security line-up, the new 2010 7 Series sedan has been given the armoured treatment.

The hardened 7 Series is available either as the V8-powered 750Li, powering to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds, or the V12 760Li, capable of reaching 100km/h in a scant 6.2 seconds.

Both models are the first in the world to be certified to the BRV 2009 standard for bullet-resistant vehicles, officially meeting the new VR7 and VR9 ballistic protection standards.

Reinforced armour plating pressed from purpose-made steel and newly developed 2.4 inch safety-glazed glass keeps passengers safe in the event of an attack.

The High Security 7 Series is engineered to deal with the extra weight of the armour plating, and reinforced suspension, dampers and suspension strut top mountings figure in the modifications list.

Beneath the car, a specially-armoured undercarriage has been developed for maximum protection against explosions.

An intercom system with concealed microphones and speakers allows occupants to communicate with people outside the vehicle without lowering the windows.

An assault alarm, fire extinguishing system and gas sensors are among the options listed for this special 7 Series.

Special packages are available for government use, including flag holders, front, rear and roof-mounted flashing lights, and a gun case with space for two machine guns in the centre console.

BMW's Security Division vehicles are custom-built at the company's headquarters in Munich, and can be ordered for delivery to anywhere in the world, in both left and right-hand-drive form.

"There's an armoured E66 7 Series - the previous generation - in Australia at the moment, brought in for the US Consulate," BMW Production Communications Manager, Tim James, told TMR.

"The new armoured 7 Series - and the X5 version - can be ordered into Australia but only by dealing directly with Munich. They're a very specialised build, and they can be tailored to both left and right hand drive."
