BMW IS SET TO bump up the efficiency credentials of its 3 Series range this September, when a super-frugal 2.0 litre turbodiesel engine will make its debut in the European-market 316d ES.

The 2010 BMW 316d ES will sit below the current 318d, and promises to deliver exceptional fuel economy and low emissions. Just 3.75 litres of diesel is required by the  316d to travel 100km, and carbon emissions are claimed to be a low 118 grams per kilometre.

A six-speed manual gearbox will be the standard transmission, and BMW will employ its EfficientDynamics fuel-saving tech in the thrifty 316d.

An Australian release has yet to be announced, but the 316d ES will be available in the UK at a price of £23,330 (AU$47,900) from September onwards.
