AUDI HAS REVEALED that the upcoming 2010 Audi A5 Sportback will be joined at its Frankfurt Motor Show debut next month by the high performance S5 Sportback.

Motivated by the same supercharged 3.0 litre V6 powering the current Audi S4 sedan, the S5 Sportback will produce 250kW and 440Nm of torque, coming online between 2900rpm and 5300rpm.

The TSI V6 is paired with Audi's seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission (a renamed version of Volkswagen's DSG transmission), sending power to the road via the quattro all-wheel-drive system.

A torque-biasing sport differential will feature on the S5 Sportback's options list.

Audi says the S5 Sportback will sprint to 100km/h in 5.4 seconds, falling just short of the 5.1 second times listed for both the S4 Sedan and the Sportback's two-door S5 compatriot.

The German carmaker claims a fuel economy figure of 9.7 l/100km (excellent figures for a forced-induction V6), however no CO2 emissions numbers have been offered.

A deep and aggressive frontal treatment and unpainted aluminium side mirrors set the S5 Sportback apart from its 2010 Audi A5 Sportback sibling.

The S5 Sportback will go on sale in Europe around March next year, with a worldwide release to follow. Audi Australia is presently examining the S5 Sportback's suitability for the local market, but European models will start from €57,900 (AU$98,500).
