While the rest of the 2009 Volkswagen Polo range has only recently been revealed, the Polo BlueMotion concept is the star of the family for those looking for optimum fuel economy (which, these days, is most of us).

Courtesy of its updated 55kW (74hp) 1.2 litre three-cylinder TDI diesel engine and a host of aerodynamic improvements to assist slipperiness, the Polo BlueMotion achieves a mind-blowing 3.3 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 87g/km.

To the frugal-minded, that’s the equivalent of a supercar that hits 100km/h in 2 seconds.

To put it another way, the Polo BlueMotion is far and away the world’s most fuel efficient five-seater.

Added efficiency comes in the form of low rolling resistance tyres, a flat blanked off grille to force air over rather than through, extended rocker panels to reduce lag, automatic start stop technology, and regenerative braking technology.

The transmission features revised ratios to eek the most out of each gear, while the suspension has been lowered some 15mm to improve aerodynamics as well.
