South Australian Kevin Weeks has charged into second place in the Modern class of Targa Tasmania, slashing Tony Quinn’s lead to just two seconds as the race moves into day three.

Starting the day fourth, Weeks made his move in the morning, winning stages 11 and 13 to close the gap on the frontrunners before moving to a share of the lead in his Lamborghini as Quinn lost six seconds on stage 14 through Weldbrough Pass.

However, the Nissan GTR driver was able to regroup later in the day, re-establishing his lead over Weeks, albeit by a small margin.

While Weeks was pleased to have moved into second place, he was left to wonder what might have been after suffering mechanical issues late in the day.

“We were going fine, but when we got to Elephant Saddle we had engine problems and we've struggled in that stage and lost time,” Weeks said. “We have no idea what it is, but the boys will fix it tonight and we'll be back there tomorrow.”

Jim Richards meanwhile retained third place in his 2008 Porsche 911 GT2, closing the gap to Quinn to three seconds, leaving him well placed to make a push for the lead today unless rain intervenes.

Local hope and former winner Jason White struggled to keep pace with leaders, slipping to fourth place, 16 seconds behind Quinn and seemingly out of the running, barring a solid fight back during leg three.

Surprise overnight leader Ben Wooster remains in control in the classic division, 17 seconds ahead of Rex Broadbent, while Greg Johnston still leads the Showroom class.
