It is no secret that Volkswagen doesn’t see a future that features automatic transmissions. The old slush box is a little low tech, a little ‘old hat’ and a lot like yesterday’s news over Wolfsburg way.

As a result, we can expect to see a lot more of the fabulous VW DSG range of transmissions in the models that fall under the rather large Volkswagen family umbrella.

Å koda has announced today that its Octavia RS 2.0 TSI (launched in October 2007), is now available with a six-speed DSG transmission. The flagship of the Octavia range, the Octavia RS is more than worthy of the slick shifting six-speeder.

Initially equipped with the TSI 2.0 litre engine at launch, the Octavia range was expanded with the arrival of the diesel 2.0 TDI 125kW four-cylinder engine in October 2008.  The diesel came with both the six-speed manual and optional six-speed DSG transmission.

Now with the launch of the 2009 model year, the TSI also gets that DSG magic.

The 2.0 TSI powerplant is the same unit that has found fame, fortune and acclaim under the bonnet of VW’s Golf GTi. That means there is an impressive 147kW and 280Nm on tap, which when hooked up to the six-speed DSG sees the Octavia RS TSI return a fuel consumption figure of 7.9 l/100km.

With the model year change to MY09 (from November 2008 production), a range of updates have been applied to the Octavia RS range. The radio has been upgraded to the ‘Bolero’ radio with touch screen technology and SD card reader and the illumination colour in the instrument panel has been changed to white rather than green. The Octavia RS now also offers an additional storage box in the rear armrest.

With Volkswagen finally allowing the DSG to be slipped into the Octavia RS, one wonders what the next gen Golf GTi has up its sleeve...?
