Holden has released pricing and specification details for its 2009 Barina. The facelift appears to be reasonably extensive, with all 3 models - the 3-door and 5-door hatch along with the sedan - receiving the 'upgrade' treatment.

Extensive revisions to the front end include new headlights, grille and sheetmetal work, giving the range a more spirited but still obviously Korean appearance (although Holden refers to it as being 'European'). Out back there is a revised rear bar and taillights, among other subtle changes.

The Barina's interior has also been updated, with a refreshed design and some new materials. An updated dash and centre console combine with a revamped instrumentation panel, to help lift the interior and bring it more into line with the competition. Holden has upgraded the Barina's stereo, which now includes MP3 compatibility and an auxiliary input.

Safety was high on Holden's agenda for the 2009 Barina, and all Barina models including the the 4-door Barina sedan receive driver, front passenger and side-impact airbags as standard.

The side-impact airbags (for driver and front passenger) extend upwards to provide head as well as thorax protection and complement the driver and front passenger airbags.

“With three body styles, striking exterior and interior design improvements, Barina will appeal to a broad range of customer groups. Add side impact airbags and the package becomes even more attractive,” GM Holden Director of Marketing, Philip Brook said.

The updated 2009 Barina continues to be powered by the same 1.6 litre DOHC multi-point fuel injected engine, producing 76kW and 145Nm. Economy is only 'reasonable' for a car in the light-car range at 7.0 L/100km for manual transmission equiped Barinas and 7.6 L/100 km for the automatic.

Ventilated front disc brakes are standard but unfortunately ABS brakes remain an option, being available with alloy wheels as part of an option pack that costs an additional $1,190.

“Barina represents great value for money in a growing segment of the market that appreciates fuel economy and the convenience of a small vehicle.”
