Hot hatch fans rejoice! The first production 2009 Ford Focus RS has rolled off the line at Ford’s Saarlouis plant in Germany.

The eagerly awaited 224kW/440Nm Focus RS is one car that we expect will shrug off the Global Financial Crisis and have no trouble finding homes across the globe.

"We are excited that a new RS-badged Ford performance model is back in our portfolio and that production at Saarlouis is starting on schedule," said John Fleming, Ford of Europe Chairman and CEO. "We've had a huge amount of interest in this model from the loyal army of Ford RS enthusiasts as well as potential customers who have never owned an RS before. I am confident that they will fall for it the moment they get behind the wheel."

The Focus RS is the latest in a long line of Fords to be produced at the Saarlouis plant, 11 million units in all, and featuring models such as the Escort, Fiesta and Capri (from back in the 1970s) and more recently a number of Focus models, the C-MAX and the Kuga.

The new Focus RS will be available in more than 20 European countries, including Russia, with the UK, Switzerland and Germany expected to be the highest volume markets.

The Saarlouis team will fit out this special Focus with a number of unique exterior and interior design details including new body parts to incorporate wider wheel arches and a wider track, complemented by revised, deeper side rocker mouldings and unique front and rear bumpers. The rear features a large venture and wing.

Helping to ensure the exclusivity of the new RS, customers will have a choice of just three exterior colours: Ultimate Green, Performance Blue and Frozen White.
