In addition to announcing the pricing of its petrol engined 7-Series range today, BMW Group Australia has announced that it will add a third model to the line-up mid-way through 2009 - the 730d.

The 730d is the first ever diesel 7 Series introduced to Australia and features BMW’s 3.0-litre turbocharged straight six-cylinder engine, producing 180kWs and a hefty 540Nms.

The punchy 3.0-litre diesel is capable of powering the considerable mass of the 7 Series from 0-100 km/h in just 7.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 245km/h.

Combining performance with efficiency is a diesel strong point, and the 730d is no exception. In fact, with the ability to use just 7.2 L/100kms, BMW is touting the 730d as achieving “the lowest fuel consumption yet in a BMW luxury class vehicle of this type” . Remember, this is a five-metre long luxury car.

“High power output and low fuel consumption are no longer incompatible, thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics innovation,” said Tom Noble, General Manager, Marketing at BMW Group Australia.

In addition, the BMW 730d complies with the most stringent Euro 5 European emissions legislation thus far proposed.

European markets are no stranger to the diesel 7 Series, with the previous generation 730d being the biggest selling 7 Series model. Forty eight percent of all 7 Series sold were 730d’s.

The new BMW 730d is almost nine percent more fuel efficient (and cleaner in its exhaust emissions) than its predecessor, while being more than six percent more powerful.

“The new generation 7 Series embodies all our latest innovation, and even with its petrol engines reduces as far as possible fuel use. But the 730d takes fuel economy into a new league, with almost 30 percent less fuel required to cover 100 km compared with the 740i.”

The smart money is on the new generation 730d winning a lot of new friends Down Under.

Pricing and specification for the Australian market BMW 730d will be announced closer to launch in mid-2009.
