Not content to serve up the Clio Renault Sport 197, Renault Australia is also bringing its Megane Renault Sport dCi 175 to town – the hot hatch for those who like their diesels.

Powering this particular oiler is a torquey, 2.0-litre turbo-charged, common-rail diesel that pokes out a handy 127kW (175hp) and a whopping 360Nm - available from 2,000rpm. Renault refer to it as, “an engaging blend of luxury, effortless performance and race-bred engineering” .

This particular engine is Renault’s existing top-end 2.0 dCi diesel and it comes packed with some rather advanced technology, including a variable geometry turbocharger and piezoelectric injectors which are capable of operating up to five times per cycle, helping to reduce diesel ‘clatter’. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard.

Renault stopped short of providing a 0-100km/h time but those who know their diesels will appreciate that it’s the mountain of torque where all the fun is to be had, and you can have this fun while sipping the ‘good oil’ at a rate of just 6.3 litres/100km. You’ll even do your bit for the planet as the dCi 175 emits CO2 at the rate of just 165g/km.

Standard fare for a Renault Sport offering is a trick chassis and the dCi 175 is no exception. Under the polarizing sheet-metal you’ll find the underpinnings of the petrol-powered Mégane Renault Sport 2.0 Turbo and the ‘cup chassis’ suspension.

Independent steering-axis front suspension ensures precise and efficient handling, in conjunction with a 20mm-diameter anti-roll bar. The front suspension has also been tuned to suit the characteristics and weight distribution of the diesel engine as has the electronically variable power steering.

The rear suspension is based around a programmed-deflection flexible beam, the torsional stiffness of which is equivalent to that of the cup chassis version of Megane Renault Sport 2.0T 225.

The suspension components themselves are identical to those employed on the Sport chassis Megane Renault Sport 2.0T 225.

A Brembo braking system is wrapped in a set of 18inch alloys wearing 225/40R 18 tyres.

The Mégane Renault Sport dCi is a EuroNCAP five-star performer and is fitted as standard with a dynamic electronic stability programme (ESP), dual front airbags and dual curtain airbags, as well as front and rear side airbags.

Standard features include: a leather trimmed interior, leather trimmed steering wheel and gear knob, aluminium pedals, climate control air conditioning, automatic xenon headlights, six-stack in-dash CD player with satellite controls, rain sensing wipers, cruise control (with speed limiter), electric windows and door mirrors and front and rear fog lights.

The recommended retail price for the Megane Renault Sport dCi 175 is $39,990.

All Renault Sport models are covered by a 3 year/100,000km warranty.
