Overwhelming Force

With a 309kW E92 BMW M3 on the horizon and the 309kW Audi RS4 already with us it only seems fitting that AMG should warm over the next generation C-class to at least try and keep up.

Once again down at AMG it appears that they have been hanging around the paint shop inhaling the fumes more than they should. Their idea of a hot bitumen burner to take on the Audis and BMW's is a mid-size C-class sedan with a 6.2-litre V8 stuffed between the suspension towers.

Black padding covers AMG's upcoming C63 due for release in September. Similar to retrofitting a Rolls Royce turbo-fan to a Cessna, the C63 will be well endowed in the engine dept.

You can tell they have been sniffing paint because they have called it a C63...not a C62 to denote the actual engine capacity. A peculiarity in naming that seems to be permeating the likes of BMW as well. Once upon a time you knew that something called a C63 had a 6.3-litre engine...which just seems like an oddly logical memory now.

The 6.2-litre V8 that will power the new C63 is the same engine that currently powers the AMG CLK63. That means its a 354kW/630Nm 32-valve V8 with the drive running through Mercedes own 7-speed auto transmission. Expect the 0-100km/h dash to be a sub five second affair.

The new 2008 AMG C63 is due to be revealed at the Paris Motor Show in September. If your 'thing' is overwhelming force then I suspect that this will be the car for you. It may even upstage the likes of M3 and RS4 at the very least in a straight line and if it does it will be in a big cube relaxed grumbly kind of way. No high pitched nancy boy 'look at me' theatrics from this one. I'll keep you updated, hopefully some better pics will be available shortly.
