In another sign of trouble for an already crippled motor industry the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show may be cancelled. The Japan Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (JAMA) reports a lack of participating car makers for this years show.

According to JAMA a number of manufacturers have missed the registration cut-off date for this years show. Although they won’t confirm this years entrants all German and Japanese members of JAMA have registered and late applications are still welcome.

Some domestic companies feel that a smaller show should not go ahead, however JAMA’s official line is to go ahead with the Tokyo Motor Show regardless. Toshihiro Iwatake the head of JAMA has said: “We think the motor show is a symbol of industrial prosperity. We have to show that our industry is healthy,"

Iwatake says the decision for the future of this years show would be made next month. He worries that if the show is canclled it will send the wrong message to Europeans and Americans who will say , "'Oh, Japan is sinking and the Chinese are up.'"

If the Tokyo Motor Show does go ahead the theme for this year will be ‘Fun driving for us, eco driving for Earth' and is scheduled to run from October 21 to November 8.
