Toyota Prius now top ten best seller in the USA

As petrol prices in the US forged their way to record highs in the lead up to May (over US$3.00 per gallon) sales of Toyotas Prius hybrid continued their seemingly unstoppable climb as well.

According to J.D. Power Toyota managed to flog 24,000 of the boring as bat poo hybrids to unsuspecting Americans who obviously forgot to punch the numbers into their calculator before making the emotional purchase. No doubt they were spurred on by the belief that their new Prius would help save a shrub…or tree or something else green.

Sales in May 2007 were up 300 percent on the previous May and were enough to propel the overpriced green is good machine into the top ten selling models in the US. In fact the Prius came in at number 9.

Interestingly, back in January of this year 31 percent of cars traded on a Prius were compact economy cars a figure which fell to 19 percent by early June, indicating an increase in the amount of larger less fuel efficient vehicles being traded on the little Toyota.

Is that someone snoring…?
