If God didn't want people to ride motorbikes, he wouldn't have made our legs reach all the way from our arses to the ground. A perfect arrangement, you have to admit, for straddling a motorcycle (and why the horse is an abomination – except maybe the Shetland).

The gorgeous Dolores struggles with that argument, but I think she's coming round. Which is why she's taking more than a passing interest in BMW Motorrad's new G 450 X.

She thinks it might be more her size… "That's more my size," she said, "I think I could reach the ground on that nice little bike."

One day I'll explain to 'the gorge D' what 'enduro' means, and why this battle-hardened hard-edged little blaster is for serious riding – not for the weekly commute to the manicurist. But not today friends.

Of course, if she did happen to take up enduro, no-one would pass her on a corner once she started hanging those stupendous butt-cheeks over the saddle. (Ah, 'the Dirk' loves her spirit…)

On sale now, the G 450 X is BMW Motorrad's first competition enduro motorcycle, which, over the past two years has been testing its mettle in the World Enduro Championship. The result is a machine that, according to BMW Motorrad, "is as easy to ride as it is fun. Serious fun, seriously fast". (Relax friends, we won't be asking the matriarch of the kitchen sciences to do the road test.)

The 449.5cc single-cylinder DOHC 4-stroke motor of the G 450 X produces 38kW (52hp) at 9000rpm and 44Nm of torque at 7800rpm (when the 'power up' plug is installed). Without the plug installed, nominal power is 30kW and 42.8Nm of torque at the reduced levels of 7800rpm and 6500rpm respectively. Combined with a low centre of gravity, agile handling and powerful twin-piston floating calliper Brembo brake system, it has the raw numbers to give the enduro cage a serious rattle.

The production version of the G 450 X is now available in Australia. Keenly priced at $12,450 (plus dealer delivery and on road theft charges) and backed by a BMW two-year/unlimited kilometre warranty, it should cobble a good following here among dirt-squirters.

Cameron Cuthill, General Manager of BMW Motorrad Australia and New Zealand, has high expectations. "From a customer perspective the G 450 X arrives ready-to-race direct from the factory."

"This machine provides incredible value for money at $12,450 when you consider its mix of performance, technology, and features," he said.

Key features of the BMW G 450 X:

  • Powerful 38 kW 450cc fuel injected, water-cooled engine
  • Clutch on crankshaft, five-speed gearbox
  • Coaxial mount for swing arm pivot and front sprocket
  • Power-Up plug for race-style mapping
