Editors note 12/06/07 - Mazda Australia have confirmed that only the 1.5-litre engine will be available in Australian delivered Mazda 2's. Aussies miss out again...

Mazda are introducing a new super-economical petrol engine option with their new 2 when it goes on sale later this year in Europe. Based on their 1.3-litre aluminium MZR four-cylinder the new engine uses a valve timing system called ‘Miller cycle’ which holds the intake valves open slightly longer during the compression stroke than is normal in a standard engine.

The Miller Cycle technology is not new, in fact Mazda fitted a 2.3-litre Miller Cycle engine to their Eunos 800M back in 1997. The Miller Cycle process was created by Ralph Miller back in the 1940’s and interestingly until recently only worked in tandem with the fitment of a super-charger.

Mazda have found a way to make this technology work in a naturally aspirated engine allowing efficiency to be increased through the reduction of engine pumping losses. When used in conjunction with Mazda’s new CVT (Constantly Variable Transmission) it is said that fuel economy is improved by 20 per cent.

This allows the Mazda 2 equipped with the 1.3-litre Miller Cycle 4-cylinder and CVT to achieve an amazing 4.3L/100km average fuel consumption figure. The Miller Cycle technology also helps to lower CO2 emissions. So, why would you buy an expensive hybrid…?

We have no word on when or if the new Miller Cycle engine will be an option in Australian delivered Mazda 2’s but will advise further as soon as more is known.
