2008 Quit Targa West: Steven Jones Pilots Nissan GT-R to Outright Victory

Steven Jones has taken outright line-honours in this year’s Quit Targa West behind the wheel of the Fabcar Nissan R35 GT-R.

Jones crossed the line with a winning margin of fifteen seconds, managing to best Targa expert Jim Richards in his Porsche 911 GT2, and Kevin Weeks in his Lamborghini Superleggera.

At just 24 years of age, Jones also became the youngest competitor to win the event and did so on the GT-R’s standard run-flat tyres, as opposed to the R-Compound rubber being used by his more fancied rivals.

In what was a fitting end to the event (which coincided with Fathers’ day), Jones dedicated his win to his late father, Warren Jones;

“Thank my dad for everything he did for me, my old man is the reason I wanted this for so long. He passed away when I was 17 and I’ve done this for him, I’ve given him what he wanted!”

To cap it all off, the win is the first for a production level GT-R anywhere in the world, and is an excellent demonstration of the car’s giant-slaying capabilities. With a proven track record, the GT-R is asserting itself as an excellent all-round package for the serious enthusiast and weekend-warrior alike.

Thank God they didn’t get a flat like the Donut King GT-R in the TT.

Congrats to Steven Jones and the team, beating JR in a GT2 is no mean feat and on standard production rubber too.

Extra kudos for dedicating it to his dad - on father’s day as well!

Absolutely. A top effort. Very few people can beat gentleman Jim at what he does best.

I agree completely. Defeating Jim Richards in a Targa event is an amazing effort, especially given the differences in driving experience and vehicles used.

Full credit to Jones and the rest of the team.
