It would seem that those leaked images we spotted last month were right on the money. The folks over at km77.com have once again trumped Mazda and released official images of the updated MX-5, a little earlier than expected.
Having seen the sketches last month, it is fair to say that the official images hold no real surprises. The Mazda designers have concentrated their efforts on the ’face’ of the MX-5, with (as far as we can tell) the rest of the MX-5’s exterior remaining largely unmolested. Obvious changes include a re-sculptured front bar, new headlights, fog-lights and surrounds, as well as a re-shaped air-dam and splitter.
While the casual observer would be hard-pressed to pick the changes, this mild aesthetic revision is enough to lift the look of Mazda’s iconic two-seater convertible and help it through to 2012, when a more substantial overhaul is expected.
We would expect that the ‘official’ official images and a press release detailing the changes, will be issued by Mazda in the near future.

Wow. That MX-5 is much better looking than the current one.
The nose is more aggressive, and the wheelarch gap at the front compared to the back doesn’t make it look like the rear suspension has collapsed.
Happy MX-5 looks happy! Got a big ol’ smile on that cute face…
It’s an improvement but why anyone would drop over 40k on an MX-5 is beyond me when for the same money you could have any number of new or second hand cars that are stacks better.
Doesn’t look a whole lot different to me.
What in-warranty, near-new, convertible can you get for $40K that handles anywhere near as well as the MX-5? The only car that would come close is the Porsche Boxster, and that thing would be tired after a decade of use, and maintenance costs far higher than this brand new car.
And that logic is true for any car. Why spend any money on any car, when you could buy a “stacks better” used car?
Why would any self respecting male WANT a convertible? They’re reserved for hair-dressers and women so which one are you?
I’d take any number of performance cars in the same price bracket (new or used) over an MX-5. I’d happily sacrifice a bit of handling, debatable anyway as convertibles twist and flex more, if it means not looking like some yobo suffering from a mid-life crisis.
A male that isn’t worried about the size of his wang. I’m a male that likes driving, not compensating for his insecurities.
Its superior handling is “debatable” only to someone who’s never driven a MX-5 before, and talks about things they don’t really understand. The MX-5 isn’t a convertible. Its a roadster. A convertible is a modified coupe, and modifying a design expecting a roof tends to generate that scuttle shake you’re complaining about. Roadsters were designed from the beginning to be roofless, and so their chassis are designed to cope and they tend to be more rigid.
I’ve driven a wide range of sports cars from Japanese Turbo 4 and 6’s to European coupes and Australian V8 sedans. The only unmodified cars I’ve driven that handle better than the MX-5 are the Porsche Boxster and the Lotus Elise. The Boxster is more than double the price, and the Elise is nowhere near as practical or reliable. In terms of handling I’d take the MX-5 over anything else built this century under $100K.
The hardtops might be faster point to point because of their extra power, but on a public road that just means you’re more likely to get arrested by the cops. None have been as much fun as the MX-5, and that’s the point of the car. Its about the experience of driving through a set of snaking bends on a summer’s day, not stroking your ego in a straight line street race or trying to attract girls because you’re too repulsive to do it by yourself.
Good post Charlie!
I’m repulsive. I need a car to get thc chicks. If I drove an MX-5 iD only attract nancies. That just wont do.
Yes. You are “repulsive”.
Nancy
I’d be happy to get back into the MX5. I miss the driving experience.
