Chrysler is reportedly pondering selling off the Dodge Viper in an effort to rid itself of the low-profit line and get some cash in the process. Chrysler Chairman and CEO Bob Nardelli is apparently keen to dispose of the Viper to free up resources that could otherwise go towards maximising the profitability of the company.

"We have been approached by third parties who are interested in exploring future possibilities for Viper," Nardelli said.

"As the company evaluates strategic options to maximise core operations and leverage its assets, we have agreed to listen to these parties. We will do so keeping in mind the best interests of those who have shown tremendous support for the vehicle - including employees, suppliers, dealers and a worldwide group of loyal Viper owners and enthusiasts.

"Viper is an integral part of this company's heritage. While this is a strategic review, our intent would be to offer strong operational and financial support during any potential transaction, in order to ensure a future for the Viper business and perpetuate the legacy of this great vehicle."

So, while Chrysler isn't willing to drop the Viper altogether and consign it to the history books, it seems, that like a deadbeat dad, it would be much happier if somebody else took care of the nitty-gritty details of producing, developing, and enhancing the Viper brand while it stood back and paid child support.

No solid decision on the sale of Viper has been made as the review is still underway, but what do you think? Would the divorce between the Dodge and Viper names harm the reputation of both, or would it make no difference whatsoever? Have your say.
