The Swift has deservedly been a huge success for Suzuki in Australia and Europe. It has single handedly turned around Suzuki’s fortunes in Australia and proven that a well priced quality product will always sell well. Recently Suzuki even announced that the Swift will be sold into the US a market that will no doubt embrace the accomplished little car.

With Suzuki’s star on the rise and memories of the Ignis and it’s brethren fading Suzuki has released some details of their new small car named the Splash. The Splash is packaged to slot in below the Swift in the car makers line-up. It makes use of the Swift platform and combines it with the latest technology and Suzuki’s immense knowledge of small car packaging and design.

The Suzuki Splash is being built with Europe in mind which means it is likely to be ‘one with the lot’ and will include safety features such as ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and 6-Airbags. Expect the Splash to offer Swift levels of driveability and refinement.

Much like the Swift, the Splash will offer an upright cabin area with comfortable seating for four adults. In European spec the Splash will be available with a number of engine options as follows:

• 1.0-litre three-cylinder 12-valve with 48kw

• 1.2-litre four-cylinder 16-valve with 63kw

• 1.3-litre four-cylinder 16-valve common rail diesel with 55kw

Environmentalists should note that 5-speed manual versions of the three engines only emit between 120g/km and 140g/km of carbon. Fuel efficiency figures are not yet available but expect them all to be ‘sippers’ especially the diesel.

Production of the new Suzuki Splash will take place in Hungary by Suzuki subsidiary Magyar Suzuki Corporation. It is not known if the Splash will ‘make a Splash’ down-under but there would no-doubt be a ready market for it should Suzuki decide to import them. With the possibility that Holden may be importing the next generation Daewoo Matiz small car the small car segment is set to hot up. With the steady rise of petrol prices in recent months we wouldn’t be expecting the small car segment to cool anytime soon.
