Rumblings from a BMW board member have put the brakes on any hopes Beemer fans may have had of seeing a productionised version of the striking M1 Hommage concept.
Previous remarks from another board member back in May raised the prospect that the edgy mid-engined coupe was bound for the production line, however a more recent statement made by board member Klaus Draeger (head of BMW’s EfficientDynamics program) said that despite the positive reactions generated by the M1 Hommage at its launch, BMW has no intention of creating a competitor to Audi’s ever-more-successful R8, and will instead direct its resources towards making future BMWs greener.
Oh well, there’s always the M6.

While the M1 was a little radical for my tastes I still like the idea of BMW putting forth an R8 competitor. Even if only for the eye-candy.
Except the M6 doesn’t cut it. BMW ought to have a supercar.
BMW, as a “sports car manufacturer”, should have a supercar in its lineup. It doesn’t have to be Zonda levels of hypercariness, but the M6 is still too GT and not “super” enough.
What a shame… So Audi probably gets away with promoting the R8 V12 TDI as environmentally friendly while BMW misses out? Who says you can’t apply BMW Efficient Dynamics to the M1? What a great opportunity to engineer some industry first innovations in performance combined with economy.
