For those of you lucky enough to have an R35 GT-R but are finding its performance a little lacklustre [Ed - surely not?], Cobb Tuning in the US has a solution.
The tuning firm has released its AccessPORT product for the R35. AccessPORT connects straight to the R35’s OBD (On Board Diagnostics) port and allows owners to reflash the Nissan’s ECU. The device, out of the box, stores 2 maps providing two stages of tune.
Stage 1 - for gains 46kW / 95Nm (for cars that have not been modified)
Stage 2 - for gains 51kW / 122Nm (for cars that have been mildly modified)
AccessPORT also stores the OEM ECU map, should you desire to return your GT-R to its ’stock tune’. Other handy features include its ability to remove the factory-set speed limiter, and should you want, you have the ability to effectively ’hobble’ the car, via a valet mode. A great way to ensure that the person you lend the keys to, won’t be able to drive it like a test pilot.
The device also contains a scanner for the OBD, allowing you to check trouble codes the ECU throws up, and to clear them if necessary. A useful tool in diagnosing any dashboard warning lights.
AccessPORT can also be connected to the Internet, so you can pull down new ECU maps as more are developed, and keep up-to-date with any firmware updates that Cobb may release.

That’s pretty good bang for buck. Now I just need an R35 GT-R to use it one
So it’s a tuning device that is kinda like a Powerchip (albeit with many more features) - in that anyone other than Cobb are unable to adjust the parameters. I don’t reallylike that idea, I mean, there is no way that you can modify the setting if there is an issue say, like pinging.
Cobb will undoubtedly offer their tuning software for workshops, especially once the GT-R aftermarket takes off and people start doing all kinds of cool things to the car. They can’t tune every American GT-R out there.
In that way it is no different to the Unichip, HKS F-Con, Technosquare, or quite a lot of other aftermarket ECUs. Only authorised workshops will be able to tune the car by having licensed software, but people will inevitably manage to “obtain” it for personal use.
Just got an R35 with this ecu upgrade, don’t know how it drives standard but this car FLYS!
Rides very smooth on stage 1 which is a nice is upgrade & it also removes the 180 kw speed limit.
