2009 Holden Barina Upgrade

Holden has released pricing and specification details for its 2009 Barina. The facelift appears to be reasonably extensive, with all 3 models - the 3-door and 5-door hatch along with the sedan - receiving the ‘upgrade’ treatment.

Extensive revisions to the front end include new headlights, grille and sheetmetal work, giving the range a more spirited but still obviously Korean appearance (although Holden refers to it as being ‘European’). Out back there is a revised rear bar and taillights, among other subtle changes.

The Barina’s interior has also been updated, with a refreshed design and some new materials. An updated dash and centre console combine with a revamped instrumentation panel, to help lift the interior and bring it more into line with the competition. Holden has upgraded the Barina’s stereo, which now includes MP3 compatibility and an auxiliary input.

Safety was high on Holden’s agenda for the 2009 Barina, and all Barina models including the the 4-door Barina sedan receive driver, front passenger and side-impact airbags as standard.

The side-impact airbags (for driver and front passenger) extend upwards to provide head as well as thorax protection and complement the driver and front passenger airbags.

“With three body styles, striking exterior and interior design improvements, Barina will appeal to a broad range of customer groups. Add side impact airbags and the package becomes even more attractive,” GM Holden Director of Marketing, Philip Brook said.

The updated 2009 Barina continues to be powered by the same 1.6 litre DOHC multi-point fuel injected engine, producing 76kW and 145Nm. Economy is only ‘reasonable’ for a car in the light-car range at 7.0 L/100km for manual transmission equiped Barinas and 7.6 L/100 km for the automatic.

Ventilated front disc brakes are standard but unfortunately ABS brakes remain an option, being available with alloy wheels as part of an option pack that costs an additional $1,190.

“Barina represents great value for money in a growing segment of the market that appreciates fuel economy and the convenience of a small vehicle.”

Um, Dan, it has been released.

PaulB - Thanks for pointing that out. The press release was not available when this article was written, we were a bit trigger happy…so we’ve taken the liberty of amending the article to reflect the fact that the Barina is released and provide the details.

Give Daewoo time and they will eventually be as good as Hyundai are today.. Remember the very first Hyundai to land in Oz? cheap nasty unsafe etc - now look at them..

Hyundais have improved so much that if I was in the market for a small car like this I would go for the Hyundai I30

No amount of airbags will help if the cabin cant hold it shape. Nor will the sodden dynamics.

Saw one of these on the road the other day, made me look twice, but it still looks like s#it. No matter how hard you polish a turd is a turd - it’s about time GM Daewoo started churning out some new metal; though I daresay it will sell.

Boo-ya! There’s a hidden camera in the bushes. You Aussies have now been Aveo’d!!

http://www.chevrolet.com/aveo/

We got Aveo’d around the same time you did, I think. This is a facelift of the car we’ve had for a few years now.

I saw the Holdenized Daewoo Gentra X in the metal this week so I guess New Zealand won’t be far behind Australia with this version. Why do we have to wait months for good cars and this is here already?! Admittedly the grille looks a bit like a Škoda Fabia’s and had me fooled for a millisecond, then I saw the rest of the mess.

Why is the Barina so consistantly bagged?

I bought a new one (2A/bags only) in April 2008 (My 1st brand new car in over 50 years of driving)

It is fun to drive, but must admit a bit inclined to go where it want’s to go rather than where I want it to go at highway speeds & tends to dislike -ve road cambre. Overall though it was not bought for extensive highway travel, and driven sensibly, seems an ideal little suburban car.

Any comments would be appreciated

thanks R N McLean

Bought the 09 4dr sedan today great little run about surprisingly roomy only grudges are no cruise control and no left foot rest otherwise PUUUUURRRFECT

Tam84, did you try any of the cars in the same class? Mazda 2, Fiesta, Yaris, even Getz? Because on any quantifiable level, they are much much better cars than the Barina. Interior quality, safety, fuel efficiency, handling, practicality, arguably even looks. Holden’s touchy feeling marketing campaign strikes again.

I am buying one tomorrow. I like holdens and I plan to stick with them for a while. Considering I am buying a 2009 5 door hatch for about $500 more than the 3 door $11,990, I dont think its too bad. I have looked at many other small cars and most of them are thousands more in price, not to mention the Barina is NOT the ugliest small car I have looked at, by far. I would have very happily gone a ford fiesta, that was my first choice, but prices are too high. The ford dealer I went to actually said “I hope holden can give you a better deal tan I can.”

I agree with kat. My wife just ordered one for her run in to work and back each day. She picked the colour she wanted, got the abs and alloy pack, a tint, and we wangled a 6 year warranty out of the dealer to boot! All for $17, 800 dollars including on roads! None of the other dealers even got close. (this was the sedan with the automatic trans as well!)PS: couldnt even get in the fiesta! I will admit it was the hatch but it was heaps smaller! I guess if you want all the mod cons the Barina isn”t the right choice but then if it was flasho that i was after i would ignore all these cars and buy a BMW!

SORRY! My mistake. It was $18,700 not $17,800. Still a pretty cheap drive away price for a brand new car though!

Top little car at $13,990.. Drive away No more to pay. Just purchased one for the wife…Black in colour 3 door no extra for the metallic paint. Don’t think you could beat it at this price. She’s very happy!

I purchased the 3 door Auto with alloys, tint, paint protection, fabric protection in May 2009. It’s a great little car. I am a tall, big gut and it’s surprisingly roomy inside. It’s easy to park with all the mod cons. And, it’s also fun to drive. It’s built really well, solid sound when the doors shut, suspension not too hard, not to soft. Inside plastics are of a high grade. I suggest while the Holden Owners Grant is still running to get one. Get ABS and alloys. Even with all the features, it’s astounding value. I intend keeping this car for a long time - 6 year warranty, brilliant!!
