BMW Reveals 6 Series Edition Sport Package

BMW has announced that, come 2009, 6 Series customers will be able to tick the box for a new ‘Edition Sport’ package. Comprising both visual and performance components, BMW explained that the Edition Sport package is “aimed at enhancing driving dynamics and adding a more sporting appearance”.

For an additional £1500-2000 ($3200-$4300), buyers will receive a restyled bonnet, new lightweight 19″ wheels, stiffer anti-roll bars and the same anti-roll stabilisation system used in the M6. Brushed aluminum trim will be added to the interior, while fog lights and the choice of two new exterior colours will liven up the exterior. Imola Red and Carbon Black will be added to the options list - which are new to the 6 Series - to bring the palette selections up to seven in total.

Buyers of the 650i will also benefit from a sports exhaust designed to “enhance engine breathing and aural pleasure”. No word on how much power this addition will add.

This seems like a good value offering from BMW. Let’s face it, if you can afford a 6 Series then a few extra dollars for improved handling, aesthetics and possibly power - while retaining the factory warranty - will be money well spent.

Yet another set of tickboxes when buying a new BMW… in 10 years time you’ll probably have to pay extra to have back seats in the damned things!

Sure, another $3200-$4300 won’t be burning a hole in the wallets of people that can afford a BMW 6-series in the first place, but why BMW didn’t make this a standard facelift is hard to fathom.

Some drivers probably think it’s a bit too sporty for it to be standard-issue; then again they are pretty subtle body additions, and I doubt you’d be a wallflower to buy a 6 in the first place.

I think options are good unless we’re talking products that are essential to a car. Not everyone likes negotiating speed bumps so delicately and may not appreciate the lowered stance of the Edition Sport. Same goes for the exhaust, not everyone cares about outright performance and noise is a very subjective thing as well.

No love Tony?
