Toyota has boosted the appeal of its large Prado 4WD and HiLux pickup models with a bag full of new safety features for the 2018 model-year.

As part of a mid-life update, the Prado scores a heavily revised front-end, LED headlamps, a revised rear bumper and new 19-inch alloy wheels on some models.

Front styling features a new bonnet, grille and headlamps that replace the cascading, almost droopy snout of the current model.

More significant tweaks lie under the skin, where Toyota’s Safety Sense driver assistance pack is now standard across the Prado range, bringing a collision avoidance package with autonomous emergency braking and a blind spot monitor to every model.

While Australian specs have not been confirmed, Japanese variants will offer a wider choice of five- and seven-seat options in a revised cabin that includes a new steering wheel and reshaped dashboard with a tablet-style navigation system and new metal highlights.

Toyota has also re-introduced the HiLux ute to Japan after a 13-year break, bringing a revised model that may have an effect on Australian cars.

Japan’s HiLux features a collision avoidance system with pedestrian detection and lane departure warning systems likely to make their way into Australian models.

The Japanese-spec HiLux uses a less powerful 110kW/400Nm 2.4-litre version of the 2.8-litre engine used to power Australia’s best-selling car, along with additional chrome body moulding on the front bumper that might not be a hit on Aussie worksites.

Toyota also unveiled a Japan-only Final Edition of its retro FJ Cruiser, a model that has already been cut from its Australian range.
