Toyota’s 86 coupe and incoming Supra rebirth could be the beginning of a new range of sports cars for the Japanese carmaker.

Industry paper Automotive News reports Toyota is considering its own version of the likes of BMW’s M Division, Mercedes-AMG models or the new Hyundai N program.

No names have been thrown around, nor a timeline of models set to be transformed, but the current Toyota Racing Development (TRD ) program could be the springboard.

An anonymous source reportedly said a “new sports car series” would debut at an event in Japan next month, but stopped short of providing finer details.

For fans of some of Toyota’s long-forgotten sports cars, a shift back toward a more diverse range will come as welcome news.

Company boss Akio Toyoda has previously voiced his desire for Toyota to embrace more sporting models as a means to reach new customers.

While Toyota is famous for its reliability and inoffensive model range, the 86 debut in 2012 and the upcoming Supra project in conjunction with BMW could be the beginnings of a more sporting flavour for the global carmaker.

But if the new sports car division does materialise, there’s a chance the new models won’t venture outside Toyota’s home market of Japan. Stay tuned to TMR for more.
