Work is already underway on the successor to the McLaren P1, with the British supercar builder preparing its most extreme, track-focussed, road-registerable car to take.

As the flagship of the range, the headline act will form part of McLaren’s so-called Ultimate Series of cars being, referred to under the codename P15 and set to arrive as a successor to the P1.

British publication, Autocar, has uncovered the some of the first details of the new hypercar, based on sources within the firm.

Perhaps the biggest change between the complex petrol-electric P1’s drivetrain and the P15 will be the deletion of the earlier model’s electric motor with the new car expected to be powered by an uprated version of the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 found in the recently released 720S.

A targeted output of around 588kW has been speculated, falling well short of the P1’s 673kW combined petrol and electric output, but ahead of the 530kW output of the 720S. Although the deletion of the hybrid system results in lower peak power figures, the weight savings from removing the system are believed to save over 200kg, giving the P15 a power to weight advantage.

The report also suggests that the new model will rely heavily on McLaren’s Formula 1 expertise, making use of active aerodynamics and a large rear diffuser and rear wing to provide massive downforce, as well as giving the new car a menacing appearance.

The first showing of the new car is set to take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, where the new model’s production name will also be revealed. Production is expected to be capped at 500 units, each with a price tag in excess of $1.4 million.

The P15 forms part of an extensive new-model push that will see McLaren launch 22 new variants between 2016 and 2022, including 2016’s 570GT and 675LT Spider, plus the all-new 720S earlier this year and the recently unveiled 570S Spider.
