Honda will arrive at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show with a brand new hybrid model, according to reports out of the US.

The Japanese carmaker previously offered the quirky and, at times, futuristically-styled Insight hybrid (pictured, above) in its line-up, but it quickly became apparent buyers preferred Toyota’s Prius.

The Insight faded away, but Car And Driver reports that the continuing success of the Prius (although sales have declined in some markets in recent years) and the arrival of Hyundai’s Ioniq has prompted Honda to have a second crack.

Honda already has hybrid versions of some ‘mainstream’ models, but this new model is believed to be another stand-alone hybrid - as the Insight was.

The new model is said to be aimed at the US market, and as such, will be built in the ‘States. It’s unclear whether a right-hand-drive version will ever be built.

Honda is yet to reveal which shape its new hybrid model will take, but an SUV could be favoured over a more sedan-like offering due to the rising popularity of the high-riding wagons.

Honda hopes more than 60 percent of its new vehicle sales will feature electric or hybrid powerplants by 2030, and the company hopes to half its emissions from the year 2000 by the year 2050.

To achieve this goal, hybrid versions of Honda’s existing models will continue to be developed.

The Accord Hybrid was offered for sale in Australia, but lasted less than 12 months before being shown the door.

The carmaker will also continue its pursuit of hydrogen power with the Clarity and others.
