The hotly anticipated Honda Civic Type R may still be a few months away from its official Australian debut, but pricing and initial specifications have been revealed today, giving hot hatch fans an informative idea of what to expect when the new model hits showrooms in October.

Despite earlier claims that the new performance hero would arrive under $50k, Honda has broken its promise with the Civic Type R starting from $50,990 plus on-road costs - putting it line-ball with the price of Ford’s Focus RS, but $2000 cheaper than the Volkswagen Golf R.

The Civic Type R will arrive in a single specification, with standard features including Brembo brakes, adaptive dampers, and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Unlike the all wheel drive Focus RS and Golf R, the Civic Type R sticks with front wheel drive, and does without an automatic option, with a six-speed manual the only available transmission. Options are limited to metallic or pearlescent paint at $575.

Engine specifications have also been revealed, with the local Civic Type R producing 228kW at 6500rpm and 400Nm from 2500 to 4500rpm - down slightly on the European model’s 235kW tune, which Honda claims is a result of being tuned to run on 95 octane fuel rather than Europe’s more readily available 98 RON petrol.

A tank full of 98 octane fuel will result in a small power boost - but not to the full European specification. Honda isn’t talking acceleration figures, but there should be no change from the 5.7-second 0-100 km/h times quoted overseas.

Honda Australia says the Type R, which goes on sale in October, has already attracted 250 firm orders as well as a further 5000 expressions of interest.

To complement with the performance enhancing hardware the Civic Type R will also feature telemetry-style instrumentation including a turbo boost gauge, g-force meter, throttle position indicator and gear shift light.

Honda will also includes its Honda Sensing, range of electronic driver aids including forward collision and lane departure warnings, adaptive cruise control and lane assist.

Overseas model shown.
