Earlier this week Jaguar announced its newest Ingenium engine - a four-cylinder petrol with a 221kW state of tune - would spread across its passenger and SUV ranges, and now sister-company Land Rover has joined the party, confirming the same engine for the Range Rover Velar.

The 2.0-litre petrol Ingenium engine range is Jaguar Land Rover’s own design, unlike previous Ford-sourced engines, and will be available with a range of outputs for different applications, the most powerful of which is the 221kW/400Nm version that will make its way into the Velar.

Utilising a ceramic bearing twin scroll turbocharger, the 221kW Ingenium engine is matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission and will be capable of propelling the Range Rover Velar from 0-100 km/h in 6.0 seconds, matching the acceleration claims for the closely-related Jaguar F-Pace.

Other Range Rover models, including the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque, will also make the move to the Ingenium petrol engine range, however in those transverse applications maximum power is capped at 213kW.

As Land Rover’s most road-focussed SUV yet, the Range Rover Velar will be priced from $70,950 plus on-road costs with a special First Edition batch of cars topping out at $168,250 plus on-road costs.

The engine range will also include a 132kW Ingenium diesel four-cylinder, 184kW Ingenium four-cylinder petrol, and will topped by a 280kW supercharged petrol V6 with a total of six petrol and two diesel engines available globally.

Australian Velar deliveries are expected to begin in October 2017 with the 221kW engine slated for a December arrival.
