Volkswagen reportedly believes an SUV, even one manufactured by itself, is not worthy of the Volkswagen GTI treatment.

That’s the word from company boss Herbert Diess, who said the GTI badge belongs only on hot hatches.

Volkswagen only recently added to its GTI model range with the new up! GTI (not available in Australia), which joined the existing Polo GTI and Golf GTI models.

With GTI hot hatches in the micro, light and small segments, Diess believes all necessary bases are covered.

“I think with the three [GTI models] we have now, we are set,” Diess said, speaking with the UK’s Autocar.

“GTI for us is ‘the’ hot hatch - a sporty car, classless, with potential for everyday use and accessible for many. It should be this car - a hot hatch.”

Mr Diess acknowledged that demand for hotter-than-average SUVs and other models is strong enough to warrant attention.

To that end, the company boss said customers might one day see the GTE badge on a Volkswagen SUV instead in the form of a powered-up plug-in hybrid.

“With any model line-ups you have electrification coming,” Diess said. “There is broader possibility for GTE than GTI.”

On the flipside, just as GTI SUVs are off the table Mr Diess said a Polo GTE is also unlikely owing to what would become a high asking price and an odd market position.
