Volkswagen has taken the covers off its sixth generation Polo light car at an event in Berlin, showing both the regular model range as well as the sporty GTI hot hatch.

As is increasingly the case with cars in its class, Volkswagen has dropped the three-door body style and instead given the five-door a more sporty style, with an angled C-pillar and wheel-at-each-corner proportions.

Beneath the bodywork the 2018 Polo is built atop a version of Volkswagen’s widely used modular chassis structure, dubbed MQB A0, which overall makes the new Polo slightly shorter than its predecessor but allows more interior space thanks to a Golf-beating wheelbase, passenger compartment, and boot.

Perhaps the most noticeable change comes in the interior, where Volkswagen has moved away from the sombre and formal look of the current generation by using a door-to-door decor panel across the dash that can be colour-matched in a variety of finishes.

The new design was also used to place a greater emphasis on the available interior technology, moving the touchscreen infotainment system (available from 6.5 to 8.0-inches) up to the height as the new-generation Active Info Display digital instrument cluster.

Volkswagen push to ensure digital-relevance includes previous features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, as well as a new ‘We by Volkswagen’ which aims to bring new mobility services to European drivers launching with a cashless WePark service and set to expand to include other products and services over time.

Safety systems have also been boosted with available safety tech including adaptive cruise control with stop and go function, blind spot monitoring and rear traffic alert, and semi automated self-parking optionally available.

From the outside the new Polo evolves the look of the previous model with a familiar overall look, but stronger surfacing resulting in more pronounced shoulder line that bulges out above the door handles, and a lower light-catcher through the bottoms of the doors for a less top-heavy look.

A new slim grille and optional LED headlight combine to give a more menacing face, while at the rear a more chiselled bumper and intricately detailed LED tail lights give the Polo a distinct light signature.

European drivers will have a choice of petrol engines ranging from a 48kW 1.0-litre three-cylinder up to a 110kW 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder, or a pair of 1.6-litre turbo diesels with 59kW and 70kW respectively.

Hot hatch fans can also step up to the Polo GTI with a 147kW turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. Other GTI upgrades include unique sporty styling via a different front bumper, rear spoiler, and rear diffuser with twin tailpipes, 17-inch or optional 18-inch alloy wheels, a black headlining and Clark tartan sports seats, plus an optional Sport Select chassis with adaptive dampers.

Further details of the new Polo are expected before its European sales debut before the end of 2017 with Australian sales most likely to begin in early 2018.
