In what might seem like an obvious move, Lexus has hinted that its new flagship LC coupe could be in line for a convertible version to join the range.

Without expressly confirming the new variant outright, Lexus management admitted that convertibles play an important role in the LC’s market segment

While discussing the LC’s new GA-L chassis architecture, LC project assistant chief engineer, Takashi Watanabe, confirmed that the LC's platform could support an open-topped variant, in theory at least.

Lexus Australia's chief executive, Peter McGregor, was no more forthcoming but did admit that locally the brand is “Very aware of the importance of the convertible sector of this market."

When asked to elaborate, McGregor would say only that the LC platform would be used as the basis of all forthcoming Lexus front-engined, rear-wheel-drive models, obviously making it the logical choice as foundation of any Lexus-badged high-end convertible.

McGregor also admitted that "It's been a while between convertibles for us,” referring to the three years since the brand’s IS 250 C was last offered in Australia in 2014, and longer still since the brand’s latest V8-powered high-end convertible came to an end in 2010.

As with the moderate volume forecast for the LC coupe range, McGregor admitted that even if a folding-roof version of the LC coupe did get the go-ahead for production, it would likely remain as a low-volume niche offering.
