Mitsubishi has issued a recall in Australia this week for its plug-in hybrid Outlander SUV.

The recall concerns the PHEV's petrol-powered four-cylinder engine, which may have been fitted with the incorrect spark plugs.

Also, the engine's software may not be functioning correctly. Combined, the two issues may see the petrol engine shut down without warning.

If the petrol engine is unavailable and battery charge is low, the engine will not recharge the battery pack. The vehicle will switch to electric-only mode, and the driver may experience a loss of power which could create a hazard for the vehicle occupants and other road users.

Affected models are from the 2014 and '2014.5' model-years, sold in Australia between September 2013 and March of this year. A total of 1654 vehicles are on the recall list locally.

The recall process will include a software update and the fitment of new spark plugs.

Mitsubishi will attempt to contact affected owners shortly, but any owner wishing to learn more about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer or phone Mitsubishi Australia on 1300 131 211.
