Renault has used the Monaco Grand Prix circuit to reveal its hotly anticipated all-new Megane RS… Sort of.

Instead of the usual grid girls pulling back a sheet on a carefully groomed production-previewing concept, Renault unleashed a still-disguised Megane RS on the Monaco circuit with F1 driver Nico Hulkenberg at the wheel.

At the end of the drive Hulkenberg reeled of some specially prepared quotes, teling Renault’s publicity team: "Renault Sport has done a tremendous job on its performance credentials,"

"It was a huge pleasure to drive it around the legendary street track at Monaco today." He said.

While the Monaco ‘unveiling’ didn’t spread any new or pivotal information about the successor to the acclaimed Megane RS 275, Renault has previously confirmed that the Megane RS will be powered by a turbocharged engine, and for the first time will offer a choice of manual or dual-clutch automatic transmissions.

Also confirmed, the go-fast Megane will move from a more sportily styled three-door body to the five-door form of the mainstream Megane in an attempt to increase its practicality and market appeal.

As before the Megane RS is expected to stick with front wheel drive, with a limited slip differential and a version of the Megane GT’s four-wheel steering also likely to form part of the standard mechanical package.

Rumours suggest power will come from a version of the 1.8-litre turbo engine fitted to Renault's upcoming Alpine A110 mid-engined coupe, with outputs expected to surpass 200kW.

Further details are set to be released at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but it seems unlikely Renault will withhold all information until then. Expect more key details to trickle out in the coming months until Renault’s official unveiling.

Until then check out Hulkenberg’s on-track action in the video below.
