BMW has revealed a range of updates for its 1 Series hatch and 2 Series Coupe and Convertible in Europe ahead of the local launch for both later this year.

In the case of the 1 Series, which is fast coming to the end of its model run, BMW has added an all-new instrument panel and gauge cluster with small detail touches throughout the interior including covered front cupholders, chrome-trimmed window switches, and redesigned air vents.

Also new to the 1 Series is an optional touchscreen infotainment through BMW’s 8.8-inch Professional Navigation, bringing the latest generation of BMW’s in-car operations system from the 7 and 5 Series to the entry-level model.

The 2 Series update goes further still, with the same changes as applied to the 1 Series, plus new-look LED lighting including standard bi-LED headlights with the option of adaptive full-LED lighting. BMW’s landmark kidney grille also gets enlarged, with changes made to lower bumper intakes for a wider, more planted look.

As before, both models will be offered in Europe with a range of turbocharged three-, four-, and six-cylinder petrol engines or four-cylinder turbo-diesels with a choice of six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission and rear or all wheel drive depending on the model.

Special edition models join the 1 Series range with the Edition Sport Line Shadow, Edition M Sport Shadow and BMW M140i Edition Shadow models adding darkened head and tail light finishes, plus black exhaust tips for a more menacing look.

The range-topping M140i also offers European buyers a choice of rear wheel drive or optional xDrive all-wheel drive, however local buyers looking for an all-paw hot hatch will miss out on the availability of xDrive once again.

Safety systems for both models also grow to include the availability of Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, City Collision Mitigation and Lane Departure Warning as a package, and Parking Assistant to take the effort out of parallel or perpendicular parking.

European customers will also be treated to ConnectedDrive, BMW’s online service suite though a dedicated in-car SIM card allowing access to info like real-time on-street parking information (in locations where it’s available), plus Microsoft Office 365 compatibility and a host of remote services via a smartphone or Apple watch app.

Australian pricing and availability are yet to be confirmed, but expect both the 1 Series and 2 Series updated models to arrive later this year, with little change expected in pricing.
