Skoda has revealed new information about its updated Rapid small car as the new model has been launched in Europe.

Both the sedan-esque five-door Rapid liftback and its more traditionally hatch-styled Rapid Spaceback have been updated with new front and rear styling thanks to redesigned bumpers, more expressive headlights, and refreshed taillight internals with tinted lenses.

Inside Skoda has been less liberal with updates, maintaining the Rapid’s TARDIS-like interior dimensions but carrying over the interior basics while touching up the design details of the air vents, interior trim strips, instrument cluster and climate controls.

For European customers the Rapid will be offered in four trim levels - Active, Ambition, and Style with a sporty styled Monte Carlo flagship. Petrol engines will include 70kW and 81kW versions of a new 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol in place of the previous 1.2-litre engine, plus a 92kW 1.4-litre four-cylinder, all of which are turbocharged.

A 66kW 1.4-litre and 85kW 1.6-litre turbo diesel pair will also be available. Engines are mated to five- and six-speed manual transmissions, or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic driving the front wheels.

Fuel consumption is as low as 4.4L/100km for the 70kW 1.0-litre petrol and 3.9L/100km for the 1.4-litre diesel.

Monte Carlo versions of the Rapid turn up the visuals with a black-framed grille and black mirror housings, 16-inch two-tone alloy wheels, with optional 17-inch alloys, rear privacy glass, black-tint tail lights, bi-Xenon headlights, perforated leather interior and black/red cloth trim, red contrast stitching, and sports front seats. The Rapid Spaceback Monte Carlo also adds a panoramic roof and extended rear glazing.

Infotainment is also updated for Europe with Skoda Connect ‘always online’ wifi connectivity, Aplle CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and optional wifi-enabled rear seat entertainment tablets that can send information to the main infotainment unit including entertainment and navigation information.

For Australia only the Rapid Spaceback is available in the current generation, a situation that’s unlikely to change when the updated model arrives. At this stage Skoda Australia is yet to detail the extent of changes to the local range, but details should become clearer ahead of the facelifted model’s launch in the third quarter of 2017/
