BMW has confirmed the Australian arrival of the plug-in hybrid 530e iPerformance, revealing the first details of the fuel-efficient sedan ahead of its mid-year arrival

The 530e iPerformance marks the first time BMW has applied its plug-in hybrid technology to the 5 Series, although the ActiveHybrid 5 provided mild-hybrid technology for the previous generation.

In the 530e iPerformance it combines a 135kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic with a 9.2kWh lithium-ion battery and electric motor combo that raises total system output to 185kW and 420Nm, the same as the similar 330e iPerformance.

According to official European figures that gives the 530e a fuel consumption rating of 1.9 l/100km, with CO2 emissions as low as 44g/km, and an EV-only range of 50km. Despite the green credentials a 0-100 km/h sprint can be achieved in as little as 6.2 seconds if required.

Australian specification cars will differ slightly with the addition of a standard M Sport wheel and tyre package resulting in its fuel consumption rated at a higher 2.3 l/100km while the electric range will be trimmed to 43km.

Charge times to replenish the battery take just three hours with a BMW i Wallbox charger, or five hours from a standard wall socket, with a wireless charging option coming in 2018 that will allow contactless battery charging in around 3.5 hours.

Styling changes for the plug-in version are kept suble, with blue elements added to the grille slats and wheel centres, with eDrive badges added to the C-pillars. An additional charging port appears on the left hand front guard, behind the front wheel. Boot space drops from 530 litres down to 410 litres for the 530e owing to the battery placement.

Otherwise the 530e is available with the same safety credentials and luxury options as the rest of the 5-Series range, and will sit in the lineup alongside the petrol-powered 530i.

The 530e iPerformance will go on sale locally from July 2017, with pricing to be confirmed closer to launch.
