British-Chinese automaker MG Motor, part of the SAIC group, has revealed its first sports car concept since the brand was re-formed in 2006 to be officially unveiled as part of the Shanghai Auto Show.

Drawing on the MG brand’s long-reaching history of building evocative sports cars, the last of which was the mid-engined TF roadster, the E-Motion’s preview images reveal a cohesive and convincing two-door, four-seat coupe.

At the heart of the E-Motion lies an electric motor that MG Motor claims will be capable of up to 500 kilometres of driving range from a single charge, and powerful enough to whisk the coupe from 0-100 km/h in under four seconds.

The company also describes "black technology only seen in science fiction films" though stops short of outlining what that might involve. At its core the E-Motion rides atop an all-new modular electric vehicle architecture developed by its parent company SAIC that could see the E-Motion become a production reality within 18 months.

The first images of the E-Motion reveal dramatic butterfly doors that stretch back into the cabin, with a long-bonnet and cab-rearward stance inspired by European GT cars. Up front the concept wears a diamond-pattern grille similar to that used on Mercedes-Benz models like the A 250 and AMG C 43 and LED headlights with a light signature reminiscent of the Mazda6 - although MG describes the London Eye ferris wheel as the inspiration for the headlights.

The broad-shouldered rear-end is more unique with squat tail lights that reach up into the hip-line that runs over the rear quarter panels.

In a move away from tradition the E-Motion also features a rounded MG badge at either end, that updates the usually octagonal logo that has adorned its cars since the brand was founded just over 90 years ago.

Interior images and full mechanical details are yet to be announced, however MG has promised Intelligent Interconnection Systems, which points to a high level of connectivity and compatibility with modern smartphones.

TMR will have more info about the E-Motion and other reveals from the Shanghai Auto Show when it opens on Thursday.
