Jaguar has made the price of entry to its F-Type coupe and convertible range more accessible than ever before thanks to the introduction of a new four-cylinder variant for both body styles.

The new engine, from Jaguar Land Rover’s internally-developed Ingenium engine family, will join the existing supercharged V6 and V8 engines later this year.

Both the basic F-Type and R-Dynamic specifications will be available, but for the moment Jaguar has only confirmed the Australian starting price for the four-cylinder F-Type coupe, which begins at $107,300 plus on-road costs in coupe form, making the new variant over $12,000 more affordable than the cheapest V6 manual coupe, and staggeringly less than half the price of Jaguar's top-end F-Type SVR coupe.

Using a twin-scroll turbocharger and electrohydraulic valvetrain to allow fully variable valve timing, the F-Type's Ingenium engine produces 221kW and 400Nm. The new engine is the most powerful four-cylinder engine in Jaguar's history, and manages to fall only 29kW short of the output of Jaguar’s low-output supercharged V6.

Though it may be short on grunt compared with 250kW and 280kW V6 versions, the new model is still capable of accelerating to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds onto a top speed just shy of 250km/h. To ensure there's minimal loss of aural enjoyment, an active exhaust, switchable on the R-Dynamic variant, is standard on both four-cylinder variants.

Four-cylinder buyers will be restricted to an eight-speed automatic only, driving the rear wheels, with the manual transmission and all-wheel drive system available on other variants off the cards - for the moment at least.

The smaller engine also brings an impressive 52 kilogram weight saving when compared to a V6 F-Type, which combined with the new variant's unique chassis tuning should make for a lighter and more communicative front end. Fuel consumption for the four-cylinder is also set an official 7.2 l/100km.

Jaguar's updated F-Type range now offers a forward-facing stereo camera system with autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane keeping assistance systems that add to its safety features.

Other changes to the four-cylinder model include a single rectangular exhaust finisher (instead of dual or quad tips from the V6 and V6 models), lightweight slimline seats and lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels.

The new four-cylinder F-Type is set to arrive in Australia from the fourth quarter of 2017, with further pricing and specifications to be announced closer to launch.
