Honda’s Civic range has been given a much needed boost in the eyes of fans, with the unveiling in the US of a new version of the Si variant.

Hot hatches are becoming ever-hotter - such as Honda’s famed Civic Type-R which in its current form pumps out 235kW and 400Nm from a 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.

Such figures leave a huge gap between the entry-level Civic and the front-wheel-drive Type-R performer - both in power and price - which is why Honda has chosen to follow other carmakers with a ‘warm’ version of its small model.

Honda says the latest Si is the “most agile, best-handling Si yet”, and it comes with a handy 26kW/40Nm boost to its 127kW/220Nm 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine for new outputs of 153kW and 260Nm.

To further enhance its sporty credentials, the Si is matched with a short-throw, six-speed manual gearbox.

Riding on 18-inch alloy wheels (performance tyres are optional), the Si also gains upgrades to the power steering system, control arms, stabilisers and dampers, along with new suspension bushes for generally stiffer suspension over the standard Civic.

There’s also a limited-slip differential and larger 12.3-inch front brake rotors.

Inside, the package is finished with an aluminium gear know, dual-zone climate control and heated sports seats with red stitching, while the exterior boasts a rear wing for the coupe and a spoiler for the sedan.

Other standard features include a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and switchable ‘sport’ or ‘normal’ driving modes, along with Si badging inside and out.

Available in the US in both coupe and sedan bodies, the 2018 Honda Civic Si will be officially unveiled at the New York Auto Show later this month.

Will we see the Si or something like it in the Honda Civic range for Australia? Time will tell, but there’s no official word from Honda at this stage.
