Following on from the updated Mark 7.5 Golf models, Volkswagen has rounded out the range by announcing specification details for the flagship Golf R hot hatch.

Available as both a three and five-door hatch in Europe, or more capacious wagon (known as the Golf R Variant), the updated 2017 Golf R adheres closely to the template set out by the Mark 7 Golf.

Under the bonnet, power from the 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine climbs from 221kW to 228kW making it the most powerful production Golf to date (the outgoing Australian-delivered Golf R was capped at 206kW). Torque also climbs from 380Nm to a more authoritative 400Nm on seven-speed DSG-equipped models.

The result is a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4.6 seconds for automatic hatch variants (4.8 seconds for wagon) while manual models, which remain at 380Nm, take 5.1 seconds. A top speed of 250 km/h is possible while an optional Performance Package lifts V-max to 267 km/h for the hatch and 260 km/h for the wagon.

Volkswagen has also teamed up with exhaust maker Akrapovic to offer an optional titanium exhaust for the Golf R hatch which shaves 7 kilograms from the weight of the standard system and offers “an incomparable sound,” according to Volkswagen.

Performance brakes also join the options list, adding hybrid construction front rotors with steel friction rings and aluminum centres for better high-performance temperature management and a 2 kilogram weight-saving. Semi-slick tyres on 19-inch wheels are also available via the options list.

Australian customers can expect to see the new Golf R and GTI locally in the second half of 2017, with local specifications to be confirmed ahead of the performance pair’s Australian launch. TMR will bring you all the details as they come to hand.
