Not content to settle for an expected doubling of sales volumes over the next two years with the arrival of the Urus SUV Italian supercar maker, Lamborghini, is also considering a more practical 2+2 coupe to join the range - the first since the end of Urraco production in 1979.

That’s according to Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali, who spoke to TMR at the Geneva Motor Show for the unveiling of the Huracan Performante.

Don’t expect any new additions in the short-to-medium term however. Lamborghini’s product expansion is set to be a slow one, with nothing new in the pipeline between the Urus (below) in late 2017 and at least 2022.

“Because we have so may things to fulfil - as we discussed up to 2022, 2023 - and therefore we have ideas to possibly introduce another model later on, with a sort of 2+2 project for sure,” Mr Domenicali revealed.

“So far we need to be humble, you know. We are small. We need to make sure that the steps are done one-by-one in the right direction. Therefore the answer is potentially yes.”

That new model, which could follow the liftback-like styling of the Asterion concept of 2014 (top of page) if it gets the green light for production, would likely take the place of a production version of the Estoque sedan (below) which was first shown almost a decade ago at the 2008 Paris Motor Show but has since been cancelled as a production vehicle.

Lamborghini’s plans for the new touring model, which could become a rival to the successor for Ferrari’s shooting brake-style GTC4 Lusso, may be helped along thanks to platform or technology sharing though parent company, the Volskwagen Group.

With the front-engined MSB platform as used beneath the Porsche Panamera, or a variation of the mid-engined MSS platform allowing flexible building blocks for a new model while reducing development costs. Mr Domenicali was enthusiastic about how Volkswagen Group platforms could be used in this way.

“I think that we have to be, from one side very, very unique with our product. From the other side, being part of such an important group, we need to maximise what the group can give to us in terms of technologies,” he said.

“We should look at, for example, what we were talking about as another model, we should think that possibly a platform that could be interesting for the future could be used also from us, but with a lot of personalisation because our customer wants to see that we are Lamborghini, and this is something that we need to be sure can be even stronger in the future.”

Despite his comments, buyers looking for a more practical Lamborghini will only be served by the Urus SUV in the immediate future, with plans for any additional models still under discussion within Lamborghini for a launch next decade.
