Peugeot Australia has revealed an updated lineup for the 2008 compact SUV headlined by the 81kW/205Nm turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine from the 208 hatchback which is standard across the range.

The terrific turbo three-cylinder powerplant is 12kgs lighter, has more torque and is more fuel-efficient (4.8l/100kms) than the outgoing naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine.

Styling changes introduce a new-look front-end with a revised grille which Peugeot says heralds the style of future Peugeot SUVs (3008 and 4008) as well as new ‘feline’ look headlights featuring chrome/black backgrounds.

The rear sees 3D-effect ‘lion claws’ LED lights.

And Peugeot has brought its new ‘Ultimate Red’ paint colour (introduced on the 308 GTi by Peugeot Sport) to the 2008 bringing the total available colours to seven.

While the entry-level Active model is $1000 more than the superseded version at $26,490 (plus on-road costs), there is plenty of extra specification.

As well as the three-cylinder engine, the 2017 Peugeot 2008 Active pleasingly ditches the outdated four-speed automatic transmission for a six-speeder (sourced from Aisin and standard across the updated 2008 range) and adds a factory-fit reversing camera, 16-inch alloy wheels, a Mirror Screen with AppleCarPlay and MirrorLink functionality and folding exterior mirrors.

The previous entry-level 2008 Active model with the 60kW/118Nm naturally-aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine and five-speed manual transmission has been dropped.

Next-up in the revised model range is the Peugeot 2008 Allure which sees no price rise (still $32,990 plus on-road costs). That’s good news considering the extra standard kit – the Mirror Screen, 17-inch alloy wheels, radar-based Active City Brake, City Park self-parking system and Grip Control.

Over the Active model, the Allure adds smarter ‘Oxford’ cloth trim, fog lights, front parking sensors, satellite navigation, dual-zone climate control air-conditioning, automatic wipers and lights and wheel-arch flares.

At the top of the range, the outgoing Outdoor model is replaced by the GT-Line. Whilst retaining the Outdoor’s $32,990 (plus on-road costs) sticker, the 2017 Peugeot 2008 GT-Line adds the six-speed automatic transmission (replacing a five-speed manual), Mirror Screen, Active City Brake, City Park self parking and Grip Control.

Over the Allure, GT-Line models boast extras such as a gloss black grille, black highlights for the roof rails, rear door trim, rood spoiler and exterior mirror casings, ‘Dynamic’ TEP/Mesh cloth trim with red highlight stitching, red interior highlights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, ‘Redline’ theme for the 7.0-inch multi-function display screen, red LED instrument panel surround and alloy for the door scuff plates and pedals.

“What we’ve done with 2008, and in some respects 308 late last year, is build a model line-up that makes it easy for our customers and dealers by making the purchase decision simpler – fewer options, high specification, better value, happy customers,” revealed Peugeot Australia boss Kai Bruesewitz.
