Volkswagen has confirmed its new Arteon fastback will star at the Geneva Motor Show in a couple of weeks ahead of an Australian launch in September.

To be positioned above the Passat, and taking the CC theme further upscale, Volkswagen says the Arteon is an ‘avant-garde grand turismo’ and will be the German giant’s all-new entrant in the premium mid-size segment.

In essence, this is the finished product of a vehicle which started life as the Sport Coupe GTE concept, first shown at Geneva in 2015.

The three-syllable Arteon name (the emphasis on the first syllable) combines the terms ‘art’ and ‘eon’, the latter identifying the newcomer as a member of Volkswagen’s premium lineup like the Chinese market Phideon.

The teaser images show a stylish front-end with a complex LED headlight/DRL design which flows into a grille with six horizontal bars as well as a curvaceous rear.

Volkswagen claims the all-new Arteon will be especially spacious inside with the swooping roofline not compromising ample headroom for those in the rear.

And, while not giving away too much ahead of Geneva, we’re told to expect a level of equipment and new generation driver assistance systems – likely to include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, park assist, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The all-new Arteon will be based on Volkswagen Group’s MQB chassis architecture, with standard features including variable dampers, 19-inch alloy wheels, Nappa leather trim, and a 9.2-inch infotainmant system.

While the full engine lineup has not yet been revealed, expect the 206kW/350Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine from the Passat range to be one of them. There will be a six-speed DSG twin-clutch automatic transmission, however the North Americans are curiously expecting an eight-speeder with a conventional torque converter – we await developments on that score. Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive will likely be standard.

Lining-up alongside the likes of the Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, a likely starting price for the Volkswagen Arteon in Australia would be $70,000.
